How to Start Your Own Mahjong Brand: From Idea to Retail-Ready Sets

How to Start Your Own Mahjong Brand: From Idea to Retail-Ready Sets

A factory-side walkthrough of launching a mahjong brand: artwork, sampling, MOQs, timelines and the decisions that control your unit cost.

Step 1: Define the Product Before the Logo

The most successful brands we manufacture for arrive with a customer in mind, not just a logo. Two decisions shape everything downstream: tile count (166 for NMJL-compliant retail, 160 for streamlined lines) and material (melamine for value tiers, acrylic for premium). Your packaging concept — rigid gift box, magnetic case or printed carton — is the third, because it drives both unit cost and shelf appeal.

Step 2: Artwork That Survives Production

Tile faces need vector artwork (AI, SVG, EPS) with a clear tile map — which symbol on which tile, joker artwork included. We adapt files for laser engraving or UV print at no design cost, but the brands that sample fastest arrive with Pantone references and real dielines. Expect one revision cycle; budget two.

Step 3: Sampling and Approval

A complete pre-production set — your artwork on production tooling, with your packaging — is couriered for sign-off. Nothing enters the schedule without written approval. This is the step that protects your launch date and your reputation with your first retailers.

Step 4: Economics at Real Numbers

Custom sets run $50-120 per set at the 50-set minimum, and the curve is steep: the same brief at 500 sets typically lands 20-30% lower per unit. Lead time is about 31 days after sample approval. FOB, CIF and DDP terms are all available; first-time brands usually start FOB with a freight forwarder they choose.

What We Have Seen Work

Across our custom programs, three patterns repeat: a tight initial assortment (2-3 SKUs) beats a wide one; one hero colorway with two neutrals covers 80% of demand; and brands that plan their second reorder before the first container sells out never lose momentum.
