Custom Mahjong Sets: What Actually Drives the $50-120 Per-Set Price
An honest cost anatomy of a custom American mahjong set — material, engraving, labor, packaging and volume — from inside the factory.
The Five Cost Buckets
Every quote we issue breaks into five buckets: material (acrylic compound or melamine, 30-40% of unit cost), decoration (laser engraving time or UV print passes, 15-25%), assembly and QC labor (15-20%), packaging (10-30%, and the widest variable), and logistics (variable by term and volume). Understanding these lets you trade intelligently — spend where the customer sees it.
Where the Money Goes Up
Four-layer acrylic construction costs more than solid, because it is literally two more laminations plus alignment labor. Deep engraving costs more than shallow, because the laser runs slower. Rigid gift boxes can cost more than the tiles they hold. And at low volumes, changeovers dominate: a 50-set run carries setup the same as a 500-set run.
Where Brands Save Smartly
Standardize one tile size across your SKUs and amortize tooling. Use one colorway for engraving across light and dark sets. Simplify inserts. Ship flat. The savings from these four decisions routinely fund a packaging upgrade — which is the place customers actually notice.
Volume Math, Honestly Stated
Our published range is $50-120 per set. The $50 end is a 160-tile melamine program at volume with print cartons. The $120 end is a four-layer acrylic, deep-engraved, Pantone-matched set with rigid packaging at the entry MOQ. Same factory, same QC — the difference is material honesty and where you chose to invest.
